Assisting small business owners and commercial real estate investors with the financing needed to accomplish their goals!

Episode 005 – I can actually invest in a start up or a fix and flip real estate deal with IRA money???

Note – The first 6 episodes were produced under the name Your Business Decision. Beginning Oct. 1, 2017 the podcast was re-branded to Financially Empowered with Ralph Russell.

IRA accounts have been around for decades now, and many of you may have a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA, or a SEP IRA, or your retirement assets are in a 401k.

In most cases, these assets are parked in mutual funds, stocks, bonds or exchange traded index funds. Very little attention is paid to the fact that for years, you have also had alternative options for your IRA money.

Your IRA can invest in a number of assets, from residential and commercial investment real estate (fix and flips, buy, repair, and rent out) private equity (purchasing interests in a privately held operating company or start up), the purchase of discounted notes, select precious metals and more!

We will discuss the alternative options with our guest, Clay Malcolm, Senior Business Development Officer with New Direction IRA. New Direction IRA is a leading administrator for alternative investment self directed IRA accounts. New Direction administers over 1500 retirement accounts and over $1.7 Billion is assets!

On the home page of this site, you can download the New Direction IRA Self Directed Investment Guide which goes into the alternative options available for your IRA and HSA accounts.

Before considering any alternative IRA investment, I would suggest consulting with your tax, legal and or financial team.

About the author, Ralph

My entire 30 yr plus career has focused on finance. The past 7 years have been spent assisting small business owners and commercial real estate investors with obtaining the funding they need to accomplish their goals.

For small business owners, I have assisted with arranging lines of credit, account receivable. purchase order and equipment financing, along with working capital.

For commercial real estate investors, I focus on refi's, refi/cash out, property acquisitions, financing for new commercial developments, fix and flip loans and investment property financing.

During my career, I have learned we all can make the best business decisions possible if we had access to the appropriate capital partner for each specific financial request and credit profile.

Please reach out to me directly with any question you have related to your business or commercial real estate financing objective. Also, you can let me know what struggles you may be facing in your business, and I will do my best to help you get the answers needed to get through the struggle.

Thanks for providing this information on using an IRA as a source of funding for real estate investments. I don’t think most financial planners are even aware of this information! Very useful information, well done!

Thanks Chris! Most investment firms do not permit their advisers to advise on alternative IRA’s. They prefer to keep the assets in house to earn fee income. A few of the newer independent firms do advise on alternative options for IRA’s, and over the years, I could see a fairly large shift of assets in this direction.
